Not Spam — Nov 8, 4:38 AM — [ View Post ]
Any Questions?
One of the sliest tips, I got from The 30 Day Challenge was to comment on blogs, while linking to your site. What you get is another blog linking to your site, increasing your Technorati authority and having another “free ad” for your site, on somebody’s blog. However, on the web, you can’t get something and not expect to give something back. If you just spam, people will delete your comment and spam blocks will do it before human eyes even get to it. On a personal note: I get 40 spam messages a day, on average. Stop it! It will not get you anywhere!
“Reciprocal” means never having to say you’re sorry
Internet business models should strive to be communal. People seem to miss the valuable point that the internet is the people’s market. We all buy, but we also all have something to “sell”. Be it a product, a virtual product or good old fashioned content. Whether it’s money or traffic, we’re after, we all have our agenda. As in real life, communication on the net is give and take.
Lesson One: Don’t do that!
Do not, under any circumstances, surf between blogs and copy/past a comment that looks like the one I posted above. Just don’t.
Lesson Two: Your comment is free ad-space
Your comments could be just a compliment that you would like to share with the writer of the blog. It could be an outlet for your burning desire to share your opinion on a specific issue. Or it could be free ad-space, intelligently used in order to get some traffic to your blog.
What do I mean by ad-space?
Think about what I said in the first paragraph: A link to your site from another, could mean a long term supply of well targeted prospects. (This, of course, depends on the relevance of the blog, you commented on, to your own site, on it’s popularity and on it’s own durability.)
Lesson Three: Commenting Right
- On your daily blog reading routine (if you don’t have one- get one, no better place to get SEO information or advise on how to blog for money), if you find an article that you think you could, legitimately, contribute a comment to- do so.
- When you comment- do it intelligently: Be relevant to the subject, address the issue at hand.
- When linking to your own site, try to incorporate it into a sentence, something like: “I just wrote an entry about this, a week ago, on my own blog, The Marketer Review!”
- Usually there is a possibility of adding basic HTML into comments- utilize this. It’s much more pleasant to the eye and much less spammy looking. This is what my example would look like in HTML:
“I just wrote an entry about this, a week ago, on my own blog, <a href=”http://marketerreview.wordpress.com/>The Marketer Review</a>!”
Bloggers are getting spam savvy… And so are marketers
As time goes by, a blogger will slowly realize what spam looks like and even learn to identify spam that doesn’t look like the above example. Marketers, however, will also improve their spamming methods. Take this comment, from The Marketer Reviews early days, for example:
Frank Bruno | corporate007@gmail.com | custom-niche-videos.com | IP: 70.212.241.102
I own several of Mike Filsaimes products including the Butterfly Marketing script as well as the “Seven Figure Code”
The OTO(one time offer) has got to be the most powerful aspect of this script.
I have been able to get 35% of my sites optins to buy my OTO. This was a massive jump from the previous 2%.
Any of you reading this if your not using video on your OTO or thank you pages your leaving a stupid amount of money on the table.

Does the language sound familiar? Like sales copy, maybe? That’s because it is. In the original comment, I edited out the link, for the benefit of my readers. Mr. Bruno’s page links straight to a squeeze page. Though I found Mr. Bruno’s contribution relevant, I found his link to be a cheap attempt at self marketing, at my reader’s expense. I do, however, allow self-promoting links in the WordPress automatic URL box. (Not allowing my readers to point people in their direction would be like biting the hand that feeds me, in my opinion.
)
Every blogger is going to have their own linking-in-comments policy. You just make sure you do it right and you will get through all the spam filters, human and mechanical. Remember that marketing on the web is not about weaseling your way into people’s pockets- it’s about finding your target audience and attracting them with relevant content and offers.

Great post Tali. I wish spammers would just concentrate on spamming each other and leave us out of it. I’ve had to close an email account and a message board because of the amount of spam. It’s crazy!
